A former underground Cu-Mo-Au mine located on 5 claims E of the Benton Mine in the NW¼SE¼ sec. 15, T24S, R16E, 2¼ miles south of Duquesne and about ¾ mile NNE of post 113 of the international boundary, in San Antonio Canyon, on National Forest land. Discovered 1882. Owned by Dennis Coughlin and partners, of Duquesne (1909). First claim located in January 1908. Not located or worked until January, 1908, although it was known in the early 1880's.
Country rock is quartz monzonite, which is cut by granite porphyry, diorite, and aplitic granite, the two last-named rocks cropping out on the hill above the tunnel. The granite porphyry occurs mainly in a 60 foot north-south dike. It is impregnated with pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, and its contact with quartz monzonite is marked by a sericitic zone a few feet wide. Ore concentration was secondary enrichment accompanying or following granitic intrusions. A sericitic zone exists at the contact of quartz monzonite and granite porphyry.
The croppings of the dike are iron stained and contain, in small fissures, little bodies or lenses of limonite, azurite, and malachite and contain some Au.
Workings include a 165 foot (50.29 meters) long tunnel that trends N.20ºW. and is mainly in the quartz monzonite but enters the granite porphyry. Low grade ore body averages 2% Cu on the E side of the dike; the oxidized area of the dike shows malachite and azurite averaging 14% Cu, $6-8/t Au (period values). No known production.
