Susannite from
Red Gill Mine, Roughton Gill, Caldbeck, Allerdale, Cumbria, England, UK

Locality type:Mine
Classification
Species:Susannite
Formula:Pb4(CO3)2(SO4)(OH)2
Comments:M. Wirth pers. comm. (det. BM(NH): XRD, 1987).
Habit:thin hexagonal prisms c. 0.2 mm across and up to 2 mm long, usually with a tapering pyramidal termination are the commonest form. Larger crystals are often tapering pyramids, up to 1 mm across, and usually no more than 3 mm long. Small crystals are often colourless and opaque, but larger crystals are usually pale blue and translucent. Rarely doubly terminated pyramidal crystals occur and, even more rarely, crystals can be glass clear. Common associates are cerussite, caledonite, leadhillite, mattheddleite and linarite.
Colour:colourless opaque; pale aquamarine blue translucent
Confirmation
Validity:Confirmed
Confirmation Methods:XRD
