About Edenite Root Name Group
Formula:
ACa2Z5(AlSi7O22)((OH),F,Cl)2
A = Na or K
Z (= IMA C position) = Mg or Fe2+
W = (OH), F or Cl
On mindat.org we avoid using variables with the same symbol as elements and deviate from the IMA nomenclaure in that we use X rather than B, Z rather than C and (OH,F,Cl,O) rather than W.
Z (= IMA C position) = Mg or Fe2+
W = (OH), F or Cl
On mindat.org we avoid using variables with the same symbol as elements and deviate from the IMA nomenclaure in that we use X rather than B, Z rather than C and (OH,F,Cl,O) rather than W.
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
The edenite minerals is defined as monoclinic amphiboles in the calcium amphibole subgroup with occupancy in the A position equal to or larger than 0.5 apfu (ANa+K+2Ca)≥0.5 apfu) and C(Al+Fe3++2Ti)≤0.5 apfu. The edenite minerals are defined by the dominant element in the A position, the C position and the W position.
The edenite root name minerals are chemically closely related to tremolite/actinolite, richterite root name, katophorite root name and pargasite root name amphiboles. To accurately distinguish between these closely related amphiboles the combination of EMPA and Mössbauer spectroscopy or equivalent is required.
The edenite endmember itself is unstable, and near endmember compositions are not found in nature. Furthermore, all attempts to synthesize an endmember edenite has failed. (Oberti et al. 2006). It has been found that Fe and F stabilizes the edenite molecule and therefore edenite found in nature always contain significant amounts of Fe and/or F, although not always enough to qualify as ferro-edenite or fluoro-edenite. The content of F is not always analysed, and (OH) dominance is generally assumed when analyzing amphiboles. For the edenite root name group minerals, this assumption is probably incorrect in many cases.
