The historic origin of copper mining in the Garpenberg district started here. A number of mines has been exploited on Överberget and Underberget. Mining ceased in the Underberget area in 1733 due too high inflow of water. Mining stopped finally in 1878 in the Överberget area. A new company restarted mining in 1906 also producing Zn, and found new ores in the Underberget (= Garpenberg Södra).

Underberget mines are: Lars-Andersgruvan, Lilla Biskopsgruvan, Stora Biskopsgruvan (deepest-220m), Västgötegruvan, Bergmansgruvan, Gunnargruvan, Rikgruvan, Lilla Ernstgruvan, Latvindgruvan, Ernstgruvan, Christoffergruvan and Lasses gruva (S-N).
Överberget mines: Björngruvan, Stora Hedningegruvan, Lars Hansgruvan, Funkgruvan, Konstgruvan, Eriks gruvan, Junkargruvan, Direktörgruvan, Lilla Hedningegruvan, Gamla Kuppgruvan, Nya Kuppgruvan, Rålambsgruvan and Tälstensgruvan.
