Gold-silver epithermal prospect 30 km north of Taupo. Quartz-adularia altered pumiceous ignimbrite.

The prospect was discovered in the 1970's when the Ohakuri Dam was built. Indications are the prospect is very near the southern side of the dam wall. It has been explored since by several companies including BP Minerals, Amoco, Cyprus, Delta Gold, Coeur Gold, GCO, and Glass Earth Ltd, finding only low grades of gold.

Two forms of gold mineralisation have been uncovered being (1) gold associated with thin (under 20 mms) weakly banded quartz sulphide veins, and (2) gold associated with the mixing of near surface cool water with deeper chloride waters.

Various clays are mentioned in the area including kaolinite, smectite, illite, as well as chlorite, mordenite and sericite (Royalty Corp).

Further anomalies have been found called Ohakuri North, East and West (and South but it is unclear if they are referring to the main Ohakuri prospect), but none have shown any promise.
