A former Ag-Au-Zn-Pb (trace) occurrence/mine located in the SΒ½ sec. 6, T22N, R17W, G&SRM, about 1 mile N of Cerbat and about 4 miles South of Mineral Park, on private land within a Bureau of Land Management administered area. Owned by H. E. Smith, Arizona (1939). Operated 1901 - 1948. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 1,000 meters.

PAYMASTER MINE.

The Paymaster mine is located in the southern part of Union Basin, at the head of Long Wash, about half a mile north of the Cerbat mine, at an elevation of about 4,500 feet. It is an old mine and was profitably worked in the seventies, when the cost of mining supplies and of the reduction of ore was many times what it is now. It is owned by the Victor-Paymaster Mining Company, of Los Angeles, and is now producing. The total production is reported to be about $200,000.

The mine is developed principally by a 230-foot 60Β° inclined shaft and about 1,200 feet of drift, with upraises and stopes. It produces considerable water. The principal surface equipments are a steam hoist and a pump. At the time of visit a gasoline hoist and new machinery were being installed for more expeditious work.

The vein is contained in the pre-Cambrian complex, strikes N. 70Β° W., and dips 75Β° NNE. Locally it attains a width of about 15 feet. The gangue is chiefly mineralized quartz, in which the ore occurs principally in shoots, ranging from 16 to 24 inches in width.

The quartz contains principally silver values, with some gold. Much of the silver is in the form of ruby silver. The ore is said to range from $50 a ton upward. Some of it contains about 500 ounces of silver to the ton.

Mineralization is a 3Β½ foot (1.1 meter) wide vein deposit hosted in schist, gneiss and granite. The ore body strikes N70W and dips 75NE at a width of 4.57 meters (15 feet). The mineralization is associated with a Late Cretaceous porphyry intrusion. Associated rocks include Neoproterozoic granite. Local rocks include Early Proterozoic granitic rocks.

Regional geologic features include Precambrian schistosity that strikes N30ΒΊE. Veins, fissures and dikes strike NW to NNW regionally.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 365.76 meters and an overall depth of 60.96 meters, and comprised of a 50 foot deep shaft (1881).
