Ref.: NY State Museum Bull. Nos. 249-250, Magnetic Iron Deposits of SE NY, Clarke, John M. (Sep-Oct 1921): Index Map, 44 & 87-88. An iron mine in magnetite ore located about ΒΎ mile West of the South end of Tuxedo Lake. Started 1780 in an ore body 5,000 feet long and 10 to 12 feet thick. Workings featured an inclined shaft to 300 feet deep. The mine's name is in allusion to the red color of the outcrop derived from oxidation of the sulfide components in the ore.
