Part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean.

Geology consists of Cretaceous mafic volcanics that were intruded by a late Cretaceous quartz diorite pluton. Carbonate reef rocks form cover on about a third of the island and also form surrounding reefs. The southern portion of the island is crossed by numerous gold-bearing quartz veins in a shear zone. Gold was discovered in 1824 and small production continued to the early 1900s.
