Known for its large monazite crystals embedded in biotitite levels. Located in the Anosy Mountain ranges (Chaines anosyennes) situated at the hill Manangotry, near the Manangotry pass, about 30 km NNW of the town Taolañaro (Fort Dauphin). Masses of monazite weighing about 4 kg have been found here. More than 14 occurrences of this rock, earlier labelled as "pegmatite", have been reported from the Manangotry Pass area.
The locality was discovered in the 1950s by a geologist from Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique, the French nuclear agency.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Paleozoic : 537 ± 14 Ma to 453 ± 6 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
