Four sea caves of moderate size (Grotta Fetida, Grotta Sulfurea, Grotta della Gattula, and Grotta Solfatara) are located near Cesarea Terme, along the Adriatic coastline at present-day sea level. They are hosted in micritic limestones and dolostones belonging to the upper Cretaceous Calcari d’Altamura Formation. In these environments, the mixing of sulfuric acid and sea waters occurs, producing interesting morphologies due to different dissolution-corrosion processes.
