Columbia County is primarily underlain by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, with Cambrian strata dominating the west half of the county, and Ordovician strata in the eastern portion. Proterozoic Baraboo Quartzite is exposed at the nose of a large doubly plunging syncline in the western part of the county. Some of the Cambrian quartz sandstone has potential as "frac sand". Some of the more fissile Cambrian sedimentary rocks are useful as flagstone. Ordovician carbonates are also quarried, and can yield cavities with interesting minerals such as calcite, dolomite, drusy quartz and goethite pseudomorphs after marcasite and pyrite. A few,now mostly obliterated lead mines are known from the county, and are probably fringe deposits of the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district. Glacial lake sediments and outwash gravels are frequently encountered, with till of the Pleistocene Green Bay Lobe important in the east. The Green Bay Lobe shows excellent glacial landforms, especially drumlins.
