Name:
Named in honor of Barbara L. Dutrow (1956-), professor at Louisiana State University, former president of the Mineralogical Society of America and past President of the Geological Society of America (2021), and governor of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), for her research into the tourmaline group.
Isostructural with:
The first tourmaline group member with essential titanium. The Fe2+-analogue of magnesio-dutrowite. Unique combination of elements.

A Mg-dominant analogue, probably magnesio-dutrowite, is reported from Zlatá Idka, Slovakia (Bačík et al., 2022).

Most likely a late-stage phase resulting from replacement of "biotite" during a late-magmatic/hydrothermal event at high temperature but low pressure.
