Magnesiochloritoid was first described by Bearth (1963), who called it variously magnesiochloritoid, "Mg-chloritoid" or "Sismondin", as a major constituent of veinlets disseminating the Allalin gabbro. It appears as translucent grey-green crystals (up to 3 cm in length) in association with clinochlore, paragonite, and talc. Magnesiochloritoid is also a constituent of the gabbro itself, in a paragenesis with talc, omphacite, zoisite, and epidote. It alters to a mixture of clinochlore, paragonite, and magnetite.
