Laval is an hamlet abandoned in 1942 and set on fire by the Nazi-fascists in 1944. The small cemetery near the old parish church is known as the miners' cemetery, because here are buried 78 of the 81 miners of the Beth Mine killed in an avalanche on April 19, 1904.

The area around Laval consists of glacial and landslide deposits, including boulders of rocks of the Piemonte Zone (calcschists with meta-ophiolites). Outcrops of such rocks are observable 30-50 m above Laval to the north and along the valley drained by Rio della Volpe to the east. A fossil travertine deposit crops out between Laval and the course of Rio della Volpe.

The rocks of the Piemonte Zone in the area around Laval are made of: calcschists and intercalated grey micaceous marbles, mica schists and quartz schists; antigorite serpentinite, serpentine schist, ophicalcite, serpentinite breccias crosscut by networks of calcite-tremolite veinlets, and chlorite schists. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are locally present in serpentinite.
