"The Clunes goldfield, situated approximately 30 km north of Ballarat, Victoria, has historical significance as one of the first localities in Victoria (1851) where gold was discovered and worked from auriferous quartz reefs. For many years the largest battery and reduction works in the state were situated on the Clunes goldfield. By 1855 the richest shallow alluvial deposits were being exhausted and attention returned to the quartz reefs.
At least eleven major companies operated on the Clunes field between 1857-1894 with the Port Phillip Company holding the prime sites."
Over the life-span of the Clunes goldfield it produced over 1.3 million ounces of gold.
