The Alpha Island area is part of the Lake Lefroy salt-pan, just south of Red Hill. The island and deposit have since been obscured by nearby gold mining on the salt-pan, and the resultant spreading of tailings across the lake.
Discovered in 1973. Trough like structures with nickel mineralisation above the trough, often disrupted by faults. Basal metasediment containing albite-quartz-Fe sulphides.
The host is olivine peridotite, with talc-carbonate rock, and some antigorite on the eastern flank. The Footwall is metabasalt, pillowed and biotitic, some quartz-carbonate veinlets. Grey dacitic sill like intrusions, amphibolite, and feldspar megacrysts are common.
The troughs are up to 2 kilometres long, mineralisation up to one metre wide. Most mineralisation is Hanging Wall ore. This contains pyrite, pentlandite, millerite, magnetite, chalcopyrite as disseminated blebs, veinlets, lenses of matrix to massive sulphides. Pyrrhotite is sparse. Nickel grades are 7-17% Ni, averaging 13.7% Ni.
