Located off the NW coast of Kyushu the Iki Islands comprise Iki Island itself, covering 140 km² and numerous much smaller subsidiary islands. They are built solely of Miocene-Pleistocene volcanic rocks and are temporally and spatially related to an area of volcanic rocks on the adjacent mainland, where they are seen to overlie granodiorites (Aoki 1959).
