McDonald Mine

Former copper mine operated 1910-1921 and 1951-1959.

A copper mine discovered by James Millar and John MacDonald in 1908. The mine can be divided into two parts: the upper zone and the disturbed zone. The upper part (1) consists of two parallel lenses approximately 15 m apart: the hanging wall and footwall lenses. These lenses are continuous to a depth of 350 m where they are intersected by granitic dykes, while maintaining the same orientation. Beneath the granite (450 m) begins the upset zone (2) where huge blocks of metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary rocks have tilted and show a disorderly oriented schistosity. The mineralized bodies are located at the contact between a chloritized footwall (mafic metavolcanite) and a sericitized hanging wall (felsic metavolcanites), all belonging to the Weedon Formation.

The workings consisted of four inclined shafts, the deepest being 816 m (Sabina 1992).
