The Aiguilles Grises ridge divedes Ghiacciaio di Bionnassay or Glacier de Bionnassay Italien from Dôme Glacier (Glacier du Dôme or Ghiacciaio del Dôme), two of the three north tributaries of the Miage Glacier. Gonella Hut (Rifugio Francesco Gonella or Refuge de Dôme) is located at 3071 m on a rocky spur at the eastern foot of the southernmost part of the ridge.

The name of the ridge is due to the gray colour of gneisses and mica schists forming the upper part of the ridge. The southernmost part of the ridge is made of green rocks (amphibolites, amphibolic gneisses, and strongly serpentinized rocks).

White radiating fibrous aggregates of stilbite-Ca from a cleft in gneiss at about 3700 m in elevation were analysed by Cossa (1881).
