With a total outcropping area of ca. 13 km2, two large outcrops of the Xialan magmatic complex are identified: one near the Xialan town to the south and the other near the Chengqing town to the north. The mafic rocks from Xialan are mainly composed of gabbros/diabases with some olivine- or hornblende-bearing gabbros/diabases.
Ore-forming minerals in the Xialan Fe-Ti oxide deposits are mainly vanadium-bearing magnetites and fewer ilmenites. The ore deposits have an approximate reserve of 200 million tons, with an average grade of 24.77 wt% for FeOT, 4.39 wt% for TiO2, and 0.18 wt% for V2O3. The distributions of ore bodies show typical layered structures. The fine-grained diabases are commonly at the upper part of the mafic complex and sometimes they occur as interlayers or veins in the coarse-grained gabbro intrusions and are not distinguished from the latter at the lower part of the gabbro-diabase intrusions.
