About Zhonghuacerite-(Ce)Hide

Formula:
Ba2Ce(CO3)3F
Colour:
Yellow
Lustre:
Vitreous, Resinous
Hardness:
Crystal System:
Trigonal
Name:
From Chinese for "a cerium mineral from China."
The so called zhonghuacerite-(Ce) was never submitted to the IMA CNMMN for formal approval and was published in 1981 by Zhang & Tao. It entered the mineralogical literature via a review in the New Minerals section of Am. Min. 67, 1078. The description was published in Chinese and the reviewer was not aware that the mineral was not approved by IMA. The mineral was listed in the Glossary of Mineral Species (Fleischer 1983 and Fleisher and Mandarino 1995). The name was modified by the CNMMN in 1987 to zhonghuacerite-(Ce) (Nickel & Mandarino 1987) as part of the update of mineral names with Levinson modifiers, and was included in the IMA list of REE minerals without realizing that it was an unapproved mineral and mineral name. Officially, this species did not exist and there was no need to discredit it.

Bastnäsite Group.

Not valid, type material may be either Huanghoite-(Ce) or Kukharenkoite-(Ce). Formula and the revised monoclinic cell parameters seen in e.g. webmineral.com (from Dana 8?) suggest identity with kukharenkoite-(Ce).

Originally reported from West Mine, Bayan Obo (Bayun-Obo; Baiyunebo) deposit, Darhan Muminggan United Banner, Baotou League, Nei Mongol Autonomous Region (Inner Mongolia), China.
