Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Old Terrible Mine; Golden Eagle Mine; Santa Lucia Mine
A former small surface and underground Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-Cu occurrence/mine located in the center of sec. 23, T16S, R23E, ΒΎ mile South of Manzoro, on the NE foot of the Dragoon Mountains. Discovered 1849. Started in the late 1870's (1877) and closed in 1883, reopened and closed 1857. Reopened in 1916. Owned at times, or in part, by the Golden Queen Consolidated Gold Mining Co. (1897- ); the Old Terrible Mining Co. (1902- ); Manzoro Gold Mining Co. (1905-1908); G.S. & L. Leasing Co.; and, Mrs. E.M. Jackson of Benson (owner in 1933).
Mineralization is sulfides, oxidized lead and zinc minerals in coarsely crystalline quartz, calcite and iron oxides in vuggy fissure veins in Cambrian Abrigo Limestone intruded by small Tertiary rhyolite and rhyolitic porphyry intrusives. The cherty, dolomitic limestone strikes N65W, dips 30 to 40NE, and is intruded on the south by a small stock of granitic porphyry. The vein dips parallel to the limestone beds and at places is offset by faults which strike N65E. Its filling consists of coarsely crystalline grayish-white quartz, locally somewhat banded and brecciated, apparently about 18 inches (45 cm) maximum thickness. In places it shows abundant vugs containing minerals.
An Abrigo Limestone block was thrust into place on an E-W-trending thrust fault exposed 500 feet SW of the mine.
A quartz vein occurs in the porphyry area. It is 1 to 2 feet wide and strikes N65W in approximate alignment with the Jackson workings and dips steeply NE-ward. Narrow, lenticular bodies of iron oxides with galena, oxidized lead minerals, and local copper stain are exposed, generally near the hanging wall.
Workings include surface and underground openings including the Jackson inclined shaft and a few shallow shafts in a porphyry area SE of the Jackson shaft.
Production data: Produced ore from 1883 to 1957. Credited with 320,000 pounds of Pb prior to 1930, and subsequent intermittent shipments of lead ore. Minor placer gold was produced early in the mine's history.
