Named by C. Lundström in 1874 from the Greek ÎșÎżÏÏÎčÎœÎżÏ meaning "in error", not from ÎșαÏÏÎčÎœÎżÏ meaning "nut-brown coloured" in allusion to its colour. The original spelling was changed by Edward Dana in 1892.
