Archean high grade metamorphic core complex in the eastern part of the Hengshan-Wutai-Fuping mountain belt, which represents the middle segment of the Trans-North China Orogen that separates the North China Craton in an eastern and a western block.
The central part of the Fuping complex mainly consists of strongly foliated tonalitic, trondhejmitic and granodioritic (TTG) gneisses, which enclose mafic granulite, amphibolite and hornblende gneiss and underwent upper amphibolite- to granulite-facies metamorphism and polyphase deformation. They are locally intruded by granitic gneisses (magnetite-bearing monzogranitic gneiss and minor granodioritic gneiss) which only are weakly foliated but likely underwent the same deformational events. Within a ductile shear zone along the western edge of the complex, mylonitized granitic pegmatites and augen gneisses of granodioritic and monzogranitic composition are exposed, which locally include amphibolite and hornblende gneiss enclaves similar to those in the TTG gneisses in the central part of the complex.
A northeast-southwest trending belt in the southern part of the complex consists of amphibolite facies metamorphosed supracrustal rocks (felsic and pelitic gneisses, pelitic schists, calc-silicates, marbles and amphibolites). They are associated with some small sillimanite-bearing granites which are believed to have formed by partial melting of pelitic gneisses and felsic paragneisses, respectively. Felsic gneisses that underwent sillimanite-hornblende sub-facies metamorphism contain economic quantities of corundum and sillimanite.
