A silver/lead smelter originally had five smelter hearths, operated from 1755 to 1843, and replaced an old smelter mill on the site of the Wanlockhead Museum 1682-1755. Pates Knowes was replaced in 1843 by the Meadowfoot smelter mill. From old ledgers there appears to be a 3-month overlap between when the old mill was closed and the mill at Meadowfoot opened.
Small lumps of slag were collected from the nearby stream, and in mixed mine waste from the New/Old Glencrieff mine, the smelter is opposite the Glencriffe cottages, on Church Street.
