A populated place (village) located along the Baraboo River.

North Freedom was a mining town established with the discovery of iron ore in the Proterozoic Freedom Formation. The formation is inter layered ferruginous slates, dolostones and chert. The iron ore does not outcrop, and was discovered only during well drilling in 1885-1887. The extent of the ore was eventually delineated by drilling. The deposits were most actively mined between 1903 and 1914. The town is now home to the Mid-continent Railway Museum.
