Zinc-lead skarn mineralisation in Oligocene Whangarei Limestone. The Waipapa Rocks and Whangarei Limestones are cut by a series of sub-vertical Zn-Pb-Cu bearing quartz veins. These at the northern end form skarns as prograde hedenbergite-garnet-epidote-axinite skarn, or retrograde ilvaite-babingtonite skarn. Sphalerite and galena is found disseminated in the first skarn type, and adjacent silicicified recrystallised limestone. Grades are low. Some zinc is found in the axinite, and sauconite, a zinc rich smectite. Hedenbergite, axinite, ilvaite and babingtonite are Mn rich, while epidote and garnet is Fe rich.
