Cassafrera is the ca. 2 km-long and 1.4-1.8 km-wide morainic deposit, located at the base of the arquate Punta Costabruna-Monte Pian Real-Punta del Lago-Monte Rocciavrè-Punta Cristalliera-Punta Malanotte-Punta Pian Paris ridge forming the head of Vallone del Gravio. It is characterised by large boulders of meta-ophiolitic rocks and calcschists originated from the surrounding ridge.
The toponym Cassafrera reflects the natural features of the place, in fact it is a compound name formed by the Piedmontese words "cassa" (kassa in Franco-Provençal/Arpitan, casse in French), meaning "scree made of large boulders", and "fréra", a feminine adjective meaning "of, or relating to iron" to indicate the rusty colour of the rocks caused by weathering.
Note: in mineral collections the labels "Cassafrera" frequently indicate also specimens recovered above the morainic area from outcrops on the slopes/faces of the surrounding mountains, located in the municipal territories of San Giorio di Susa and Villar Focchiardo.
