The Chalice Gold Mine is somewhat isolated from the other mines on the Higginsville field. It is approximately 20 kilometres west of the Coolgardie-Norseman Highway, and south-west of the other mines which are east of the highway.
The mine is hosted in a sequence of intercalated mafic and ultramafic amphibolites, and a post peak metamorphism monzogranite dyke. The west side is flanked by calc-alkaline plutonic rocks, and the east by monzogranitic pluton.
There are at least 4 generations of dyke intrusions through the deposit, and 2 stages of gold mineralisation.
95% of the gold mineralization is controlled by D2 assymetrical folds developed in the mafic amphibolite. This is expressed as veins and wall rock replacement of quartz-diopside-plagioclase-K Feldspar-titanate-pyrrhotite-pyrite-magnetite-garnet, hornblende, scheelite and biotite assemblage.
A second stage (5%) mineralization is associated with monzogranite dyke intrusions as disseminated gold in the dykes, and foliation-discordant veins of quartz-gold, quartz-diopside-gold, actinolite-gold and molybdenite-tellurobismuthite-gold. This second stage mineralization is unusual for Yilgarn Craton gold deposits.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Neoarchean : 2631 Ma to 2611 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
