The area NW of Iran, immediately S of the border with Azerbaijan and W of the Caspian Sea, comprises a volcanic plateau, the southern margin of which is dominated by large Sabalan (Savalan) volcano. The plateau covers c. 15000km², while Sabalan extends over c. 700km² and reaches an elevation of 4821m.
