An elbaite-subtype granite pegmatite hosted in a dolomite marble and a Mg-rich, calc-silicate rock.

One of the most famous of the more than 100 pegmatites in the Sahatany Pegmatite Field. It is situated in a ravine about 2 km W of the village of Ihasy in the Sahatany Valley, about 25 km SW of the town of Antsirabe. It is sometimes labelled as "Manjaka, Mt. Ibity". Mt. Ibity or the Ibity Massif forms the eastern border of the Sahatany Pegmatite Field.

Duparc et al. (1911) and A. Lacroix (1911) erroneously called the locality "Ampakita" (Bulletin de la Société Française de Minéralogie, 34, 131-139). The locals now refer to the site as "Sahananana".

A complex LCT pegmatite is hosted in marble and has been worked for gem tourmaline since the beginning of the 20th century. The pegmatite body is now exhausted. Numerous minerals have been found, mostly in the many miarolitic cavities in the pegmatite.

An Al-rich tourmaline with unit cell parameters a =15.777 Å and c =7.086 Å is reported by Ertl et al. (2008).

Description: Behier (1953) describes small brown strongly refrigent crystals as "blomstrandite". Visual examination of the specimens collected by J. Behier and labelled blomstrandite, Manjaka in the Musée National de la Géologie in Ampandrianomby in Antananarivo, Madagascar is very similar to what later has been proved to be a hafnian zircon (per. com. Knut Edvard Larsen, 1999)
