There are numerous small pegmatites in this area which have been mined for beryl, columbite-tantalite and bismuth. It is named after the survey cairn on the hill overlooking Beryl Well. The cairn is within 100 metres of the Bismuth Hill and Beryl Hill pegmatites, and some references include all three as the same location. The Cairns pegmatites trend north-west to south-east, averaging 150m x 20m, the largest being 500m x 50m. The thin pegmatites vary from fine grained, homogeneous microcline - plagioclase - quartz - muscovite veins to coarser grained with moderately developed zoning. The set-up at the Cairn Mining Centre indicates that eluvium had been processed for columbite-tantalite, effectively stripping the top and flanks of Beryl Hill and beyond. Shallow diggings and shafts on Bismuth Hill have produced bismuth minerals.

Almandine garnet is present as fine grained aggregates in quartz up to 10cm across.
