Redross Ni mine
A nickel mine located about 20 km SSE of Widgiemooltha.
Discovered in 1968, and mined between 1973 and 1978. Redevelopment started in 2003.
The deposit was discovered in 1968 by Anaconda Resources. The mine is named after the geologist who discovered it, Ross Kennedy, who is a red-head, hence Redross Mine. Ross found a gossan which assayed 0.4% Ni and 500 ppm Cu, and follow-up drill testing led to the discovery of the deposit. A vertical shaft was sunk in 1971/72, and after a delay mining started in 1974, but closed early 1976 it is said due to poor management by Anaconda and low nickel prices.
Open pit mining started in the early 1990's by Western Mining Resources and later there was a decline to an underground mine. The Redross N01C orebody forms a half oval plunging south. It is flanked by the N10 orebody of flanking facies ore developed adjacent to the trough. Parallel and subparallel ore trends have developed along the strike from Redross which includes N20, N20 Upper and N30 but all are sub-economic.
The trough and ore are highly deformed and suffers significant post deposition dislocation by a series of north-south trending strike-slip faults. The komatiite has a talc-magnesite assemblage and mineralisation is dominated by monoclinic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, with lesser chalcopyrite and pyrite.
