Located about 1.5 km SE of St Keverne, Dean quarry is adjacent to Dean Point on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula and is developed in a large intrusion of gabbro that extends from Coverack to St Keverne and from Manacle Point to Trelan. The gabbro, which varies in texture from schistose to pegmatitic (pyroxenes to 25 cm), was described in detail in J. S. Flett (1946) Geology of the Lizard and Meneage (BGS Memoir).

A.F. Seager (1969) wrote that he had visited the quarry for 15 years without finding anything of unusual mineralogical interest, but on a visit in 1967 found zeolites lining vughs in the altered dolerite. Since then the quarry has been a notable Cornish locality for crystallised analcime, natrolite, stilbite, prehnite and calcite in particular.

Worked commercially up until 2005, more recently (2018) a proposal was made to develop the site into a mega-quarry. Five million tonnes of rock would be extracted which would be shipped to Swansea Bay in Wales to create 6.5 miles of breakwaters for an artificial lagoon that would generate electricity from the changing tides. This met with significant opposition from the local community in Cornwall, and later the UK Government formally turned down the bid to build the Β£1.3 billion lagoon on economic grounds.

Description: Wilson et al. (2008): "No XRD was carried out on this sample but calcium was shown to be present by chemical testing. The sample is in Plymouth Museum. Mindat, and Golley and Williams (1995), list scolecite at Dean Quarry but without a defining reference."

Formula: M6-7[Al8-9Si27-28O72] · nH2O
β“˜ Volborthite ?
Formula: Cu3(V2O7)(OH)2 · 2H2O
Description: A mineral which is almost certainly volborthite occurs as minute yellow to yellow green spherules (up to about 0.3 mm across) in fractures in the rock. Insufficient material was available for analysis by XRD, but EDS produced a trace which is typical of volborthite. Identification can only be tentative without a confirmatory analysis by XRD, but the data is included in the hope that a detailed examination of further specimens will reveal sufficient material.
