Name(s) in local language(s):
Serra de Collserola, Barcelona ciutat, Barcelonès, Barcelona, Catalunya (Cataluña), España
A range of hills that is part of the Catalonian coastal mountain range, located in the center of the range with an area of nearly 10,000 hectares. To the north it borders on the BesΓ³s valley, to the south on the Llobregat valley, to the east on the Barcelona plain, and to the west on the VallΓ©s depression. It can be divided into three well-defined units:
- Barcelona ridge that goes from the TurΓ³ (hill) de Sant Pere MΓ rtir (384 m) above the Llobregat river, to the TurΓ³ de Roquetes (304 m) above the BesΓ³s River. The highest peak of this area is the Tibidabo (515 m) which has very steep slopes down towards the city of Barcelona.
- The main ridge that goes down towards the VallΓ©s area across Rabassada mountain range with the TurΓ³ del Puig (471 m), the TurΓ³ del Penitent (409 m) and the TurΓ³ del Soldat (368 m).
- Llobregat ridge area that goes from the Sant Pere MΓ rtir TurΓ³ to the Puig (peak) Madrona (337 m) including the following hills: TurΓ³ d'en Cors (393 m), Penya del Moro (275 m), Turons de Can Pasqual (467 m), Puig d'Olorda (424 m) and TurΓ³ del Xai (373 m).
The Collserola mountain range is shared between three geographical districts: BarcelonΓ¨s, Baix Llobregat and VallΓ¨s Occidental and nine townships: Barcelona, Esplugues de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Molins de Rei, el Papiol, Sant Cugat del VallΓ¨s, Cerdanyola del VallΓ¨s and Montcada i Reixac. This range forms a quite well-preserved natural space, a βgreen islandβ located in the center of one of the most densely populated areas of the Mediterranean coast. It is considered one of the largest urban or suburban parks in the world with an area eight times greater than Bois de Boulogne in Paris and twenty two times greater than Central Park in New York.
From a geological point of view, the Collserola mountain range is formed of a great variety of Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks modified by Hercynian tectonics as well as low-grade regional metamorphism and intrusions of granitoids and vein-type rocks. The intrusion of granitoids caused an aureole of metamorphism contact in the neighboring shale generating different mineral deposits. In some areas significant strata of Silurian and Devonian limestone are present (Santa Creu dΒ΄Olorda, TurΓ³ de Montcada), which have, until recently, been used for industrial purposes.
Since 2012 almost the whole Collserola mountain range has been designated a natural park, so mineral collecting activities are now restricted.
