Kestane porphyry Cu–Au zone, Bakirlik skarn Au–Ag +/-base metal zone and related Kunk Hill and Kumlugedik HS epithermal zone forming lithocaps.
The Halilaga porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit (~320 m a.s.l.) with an indicated resource of 182.7 Mt of ore at 0.27 % Cu, 0.3 g/t Au, and 0.0057 % Mo and an inferred resource of 178.7 Mt of ore at 0.23 % Cu, 0.24 g/t Au, and 0.0087 % Mo is the largest porphyry system yet discovered and located in the Biga Peninsula.
The geology of the Halilaga deposit is predominantly represented by
Eocene to Oligocene volcanic, subvolcanic, and volcano-sedimentary
rocks and associated plutonic rocks cutting pre-Eocene sedimentary
rocks that are all set on Cretaceous basement rocks. The deposit is hostedby the Eocene Kestane porphyry, composed of two intrusive phases: (i) a mineralized and altered quartz monzonite porphyry (Phase A) and (ii) a poorly-mineralized and altered quartz monzonite to granodiorite porphyry (Phase B) that have zircon U-Pb ages of 39.19 ± 0.47 Ma and
37.79 ± 0.36 Ma, respectively. Associated Cu-Au-Mo mineralization is contemporaneous with the emplacement age of the earlier phase (Phase A) of the Kestane porphyry, as evidenced by a molybdenite Re-Os age of 39.56 ± 0.21 Ma from a quartz + molybdenite vein. The age of the mineralization and magmatism suggests a temporal link with the Kus¸çayır intrusion (K/Ar hornblende, 38 Ma), located 13 km to the WNW. The Kestane porphyry intrudes into an Eocene volcano-sedimentary sequence, which resulted in the development of hornfells in the immediate vicinity. Oligocene Pirentepe volcanics cover large areas in the north and east of the porphyry and have faulted and nonconformable contacts with the Eocene volcano-sedimentary unit and the porphyry on the surface. Pirentepe volcanics characterized by products of explosive and effusive volcanism in the area yield zircon U-Pb ages of 28.36 ± 0.59 Ma
and 28.54 ± 0.26 Ma from an andesitic porphyry (located ~ 1 km to the
NE of the Kestane porphyry) and andesitic tuff, respectively.
Porphyry Cu-Au mineralization resulted in an inner zone of biotite +
magnetite ± K-feldspar alteration together with intense quartz veining,
which is partially overprinted by (i) pervasive sericite ± quartz alteration at shallow levels and (ii) intense chlorite ± sericite alteration at deeper levels. On the other hand, epidote + chlorite + calcite alteration constitute the alteration along the margins of the porphyry system.
Mineralization is represented by veinlets, quartz stockworks, and fine
disseminations, with the primary ore minerals chalcopyrite, pyrite,
pyrrhotite, and magnetite. In addition, rare molybdenite is observed as
disseminations and minor veining in the Kestane porphyry. Porphyry
Cu-Au ore is mainly concentrated within the biotite + magnetite ± Kfeldspar assemblage and associated intense quartz veining, with higher
grades distributed in the Kestane stock. A supergene zone is observed in
the central part of the deposit and is represented by 20–50 m of supergene mineralization that contains (i) a leached limonitic cap with
goethite ± hematite quartz stockwork and (ii) a copper-enriched zone
consisting of covellite, digenite, and chalcocite disseminations.
