The valley is drained by the Melezzo Orientale or simply Melezzo brook, which flows south towards Crana and Santa Maria Maggiore. From an administrative point of view, the left side of the valley belongs to the municipality of Toceno, while the right side is mainly included in the municipal territory of Santa Maria Maggiore. Valle Cortino (whose head belongs to the municipalities of Druogno and Masera) is a right side-valley drained by Rio Cortino, which flows into Melezzo in front of Arvogno village.

The valley is carved in granitic orthogneisses of the Pioda di Crana nappe (Lower Pennidic).

A swarm of pegmatitic dykes, veinlets, and nests occurs in the middle portion of the valley, to the south of Arvogno. Typical minerals are euxenite-(Y), gadolinite-(Y), allanite-(Y), allanite-(Ce), xenotime-(Y), and aeschynite-(Y), but many other rare and common species are known [see http://www.mindat.org/loc-13704.html].

From granite gneiss, in the surroundings of the pegmatite bodies (at Rio Durino, etc.) and in the area Punta la Scheggia-Cima Campelli-Cima Caseletti-Pioda di Crana, at the head of the valley, are known various minerals, including quartz, muscovite, calcite, K feldspar var. adularia, hematite, rutile, titanite, epidote, kyanite, and zeolites (stilbite, heulandite, and chabazite).

Provided coordinates are referred to the place where an old path (now abandoned)started, going towards the Melezzo Creek (way to "il Fiume" pegmatitic dyke).
