The feldspar quarries in the granite pegmatite dikes belonging to the Katterås Farm about 1,5 km W of Birkeland in Iveland, are located close to the border of Iveland municipality, but inside the Birkenes municipality. They are listed by Bjørlykke (1934) together with the pegmatites of Iveland.
There is uncertainty regarding the Katterås quarries and the published litterature refering to them: Frigstad (1968) did not manage to find Bjørlykke(1934)'s "Katterås 1" locality at the Øygardsheia, though he found a quarry fitting Bjørlykke's description at another location, ca. 700 m to the SW.
Bjørlykke (1934) gives the following information:
= > "104. Katterås 1. The southern feldspar quarry on the hill Øigardsheia."
=> "105. Katterås 2, about 20 m north of Katterås l."
Assuming Bjørlykke was wrong about the name of the hill, then the three quarries clearly visible at the altitude map, close to the border with the Birkeland farm, can actually be nr. 1, 2 and 4.
Nr. 1 : 58.53445,7.932
Nr. 2 : 58.53431,7.93199
Nr. 4 : 58.53441,7.93269
Frigstad did not differentiate between the quarries he called Katterås 4.
Frigstad (1968) observed a cleavelandite zone only in the eastern quarry, while Bjørlykke (1934) observed cleavelandite in the northern quarry.
That would also imply that the Katterås 4 locality did not exist at the time Bjørlykke visited Katterås , since nr. 4 is located 40 m E of 1 and 2.
These discrepancies suggests that there actually could be quarries at the Øygardsheia that have yet to be rediscovered.
Candidates ssen from altitude maps are:
58.54099°N 7.92835°Ø
58.54073°N 7.92781°Ø
58.5415°N 7.92866°Ø
Since this puzzle is not going to be solved soon, the threee quarries as mentioned here are assigned the numbers 1, 2 and 4. Should anyone rediscover the quarries at the Øygardsheia, then obviously these here should be re-numbered.
The coordinates are for the farmhouse.
