Cava dell'Osa, Osteria dell'Osa, Roma, Città metropolitana di Roma Capitale (Provincia di Roma), Lazio, Italia
Abandoned quarry about 18 km from Rome, near Osteria dell'Osa.
It exploited the rock of the Osa lava flow (297±4 ka; Marra et al., 2003), which lies over the "Villa Senni Eruption Unit" ignimbrites and is an effusive product of a vent of the Pantano Borghese extra-caldera system (Tusculano Artemisio-Monte delle Faete period of activity of the Colli Albani Volcano). This lava is a melilite leucitite, which may differentiate itself locally by assuming the characters of a leucitite nephelinite with melilite and olivine.
The rock frequently holds small cavities containing calcite, often associated with zeolites, fluorapatite, and vonsenite; moreover calcite is present in the form of veins and is also noticeable under a microscope dispersed in the groundmass, often surrounding leucite and nepheline crystals.
The quarry, closed in the middle of the 1970s, has yielded a large number of gismondine crystals (up to 1 cm in size), which probably represent the best crystals for this species from the Colli Albani lava flows.
Anthony et al. (1995, reprinted 2003) reported without references the presence of ashcroftine-(Y). Many specimens of presumed ashcroftine-(Y) submitted for analysis resulted to be amorphous or non-crystalline; they do not contain K and REE (see http://forum.amiminerals.it/viewtopic.php?t=6071). According to Carlini & Signoretti (2018) the lilac, brown or creamy interlaced acicular crystals or felted masses incorrectly attributed in the past by some collectors to ashcroftine-(Y) are referable to more or less altered terms of the ludwigite-vonsenite series.
