Rasvumchorr is a mountain plateau in the Khibiny Mountains.
Located at an altitude of up to 1050 m above sea level in the southeastern part of the Khibiny massif. It is separated from the Yuksporr Plateau from the north by the Yuksporrlak Pass. In the southeast, it borders with Mount Koashva. From the south, the plateau is bounded by the basin of the Vuonimyok stream, and from the southeast by the basin of the Yuksporryok stream.
Rasvumchorr can be translated from Sami as βMountain of the Grassy Valleyβ.
During the annual expeditions organized by the famous geologist Academician A.E. Fersman to study the Khibiny massif, some interesting discoveries were made. In 1921, samples of green sugary apatite, previously unknown in the north, were discovered. In 1923 its primary outcrops were found for the first time, and in 1925-1926, geologist A.N. Labuntsov discovered even more deposits of apatite on the slopes of Rasvumchorr.
The apatite-nepheline ore deposit βRasvumchorr Plateauβ is part of a single apatite deposit located at absolute elevations from 1050 to 650 meters above sea level.
In 1962, the Central mine was put into operation on the plateau for the open-pit development of the Rasvumchorr Plateau deposit. Over the entire period of its existence, the mine produced more than 600 million tons of ore. The reserves of the deposit within the boundaries of the quarry currently amount to 45 million tons of ore. The Central mine is part of the CF system of Apatit JSC.
The Rasvumchorr plateau is called βLittle Antarcticaβ: apatite-nepheline ores are mined in harsh climatic conditions. Strong winds blow here, combined with frosts and high air humidity, polar night, long winter (snow lies about 250 days a year). The average annual temperature is β4.8 degrees. It snows here 237 days a year, rains 98 days, and wind blows 285 days. The height of the snow cover by the end of winter reaches 2.5 meters.
