The shafts are situated to the east of Cligga Head.

An ancient mine originally worked for tin, the Great St George Mine was first mentioned in 1589. Mining for copper in the area was occurring in the late 18th century; between 1800-04, Great St George Mine raised 1,507 tons of copper ore (149 tons copper metal), selling for Β£14,559 (period value). However, by 1812, the mine was returning small amounts of ore.

Note on the mineral list: The reference to atacamite at Perran St George is from Kingsbury. Given the doubts about the provenance of other Kingsbury specimens, this occurrence must be considered highly doubtful as well.
