The quarry is situated geologically within the distinctive ‘Shannapheasteen Granite’ pluton, an enclosed pluton within the central block of the Galway Granite Batholith (Geological Survey of Ireland, 1;100,000 Map Sheet 14). These granites have been dated as early-middle Devonian in age (c. 395 million years old). The Shannapheasteen Granite is described by the Geological Survey of Ireland as an “aphyric, fine grained granite”.
Occasionally, late stage veins bearing fluorite, galena, sphalerite and cerussite appear during quarry works. In 2015 an exceptional find of fluorite was made. It was first purchased and dealt by Thames Valley Minerals (U.K.), and subsequently by Moorland Minerals.
Note: there is no public access to this quarry. The quarry owners view the fluorite as a by-product of their business. They recover the specimens themselves and have private arrangements for its distribution to selected mineral dealers.
