The volcano was almost continuously active from its birth in 1770 until 1958. Since then only a brief, very small flank eruption in 1966 has interrupted dormancy. Pre-1966 Izalco lavas are vesicular vitrophyric olivine basalts, usually with bytownite phenocrysts and augite.

Many new minerals have been found in the fumaroles and fumarolic sublimates which are unusually rich in vanadium.

Stoiber and Rose (1974) reported a couple unknown minerals that may have since been described, but a comparison of x-ray patterns is needed:
Fe2(SO4)3 with an X-ray pattern matching ASTM 14-253. Possibly mikasaite?
KAl(SO4)2 with an X-ray pattern matching ATSM 3-337. Possibly steklite?
