Lincoln County is covered by thick glacial drift, lakes, marshes and forests, thus bedrock exposures are sparse. It is underlain by a complex mix of granitic rocks, meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks. These were deformed during the Penokean Orogeny, a continent-to-continent collision event occurring about 1.8 billion years old. Caught up in these are several massive sulfide deposits that have been prospected geophysically and by drill coring. A few outcrops of meta-sedimentary rocks yield interesting metamorphic minerals. Outcrops of Precambrian rocks occur along the Wisconsin River between Merril and Tomahawk. The glacial drift may yield specimens to the determined collector, including drift copper, "Lake Superior" agates, placer gold and perhaps a drift diamond or two.
