Little ancient town on the hills 12 km from Florence, surrounded by a large ophiolite outcrop with copper ores (mainly in gabbro).

We suppose an ancient mining of this copper but the first documented workings were in 1849 on the southern slope of Poggio alle Carraie, 4 km to the West.

Only at the beginning of the 20th century, mining starts in the Nalbi area (close in the east of town) between Sassi Neri (= black stones) and Terre Bianche (= white earths) from which the famous copper specimens come (the biggest weighed 1750 kg). All workings stopped before WWII.
