Layered mafic sill 25 km in diameter and 1000 m thick.

A number of doleritic and gabbroic intrusive sheets occur in the northern Eastern Cape Province. One of the more extensive of these is the Insizwa-Ingeli-Tonti-Tabankulu intrusion, which occurs 175 kilometres southwest of Durban. Picrite and troctolite dominate the basal zone, hypersthene gabbro the central zone, and quartz diorite and quartz monzonite the upper zone. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite grains occur in the picrite as well as in cross-cutting veins and sheets of massive sulphide in association with the acid phases. The sulphide mineralisation is confined to the lower contact of the intrusive gabbroic sill and it is generally accepted that the two are genetically related. Nickel sulphides were originally found at Waterfall Gorge as early as 1865 by Rudlin. Insizwa is known for its assemblage of platinum group minerals, of which insizwaite (PtBi2), niggliite (PtSn) and parkerite (Ni3(Bi,Pb)2S2) were first described from here and several remain unnamed. Sperrylite is relatively common in the massive ore, where it occurs as well-formed crystals up to 0.2mm in length in contact with pyrrhotite, cubanite and parkerite.
