The Monviso ophiolite complex (Cottian Alps) is one of the largest metamorphic ophiolites in the Western Alps. It forms a NS-trending body, 35 km long and up to 8 km wide, dipping to the west and extending from the Maira Valley - Varaita Valley divide (Cuneo Province, Piedmont, Italy) to the Germanasca Valley (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont, Italy) to the north. To the west, a small sector is located in the Guil Valley (Hautes-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France) along the main Alpine Divide, between Passo di Vallanta/Col Vallante (2811 m) and Colle Selliere/Col Sellière (2834 m). The ohiolite complex takes its name from Monviso or Monte Viso (3841 m), the highest peak in the Cottian Alps, part of the larger Monviso Group.
The complex is structurally sandwiched between the underlying Dora-Maira thrust units and the other, dominantly metasedimentary, units of the ocean-derived Piemonte Zone. This N-MORB type ophiolite complex of Jurassic age suffered the eclogite-facies Alpine metamorphism. It was originally subdivided in six major lithotectonic units from top to bottom named: Vallanta (or Traversette) Unit, Costa Ticino (or Forciolline) Unit, Passo Gallarino Unit, Viso Mozzo Unit, Lago Superiore Unit, and Basal Serpentinite Unit (Lombardo et al., 1978; Lombardo et al., 2002). The current semplified model consists of two tectono-metamorphic units, which experienced different Alpine eclogitic peaks: the Monviso Unit, with P=2.1-2.2 GPa and T=480-500°C (Angiboust et al., 2012), and the Lago Superiore Unit, with P=2.6-2.8 GPa and T=530-550°C (Gilio et al., 2020). The age of the eclogitisation varies: the Lago Superiore unit yielded a Sm-Nd isochron age of 61 ± 10 Ma from garnet + omphacite (Cliff et al., 1998), a Lu-Hf isochron age of 49 ± 1 (Duchêne et al., 1997), and a U-Pb zircon age of 45 ± 1 Ma by Rubatto & Hermann (2003). These ages are comparable to 39Ar-40Ar age of 50 ± 1 Ma (Monié & Philippot, 1989).
Ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphism experienced by the Lago Superiore Unit has been recently supported by the direct observation near Colle del Baracun (Bobbio Pellice, Metropolitan City of Turin) of non-re-equilibrated coesite (and polycrystalline quartz after coesite), occurring as garnet inclusions (Ghignone et al., 2023).
