A long-abandoned mining area, one of the first in Tasmania (started about 1840). It originally worked iron deposits, and later various commodities including asbestos, ochre, chromite, osmiridium and nickel were mined or prospected. The deposit is based on some serpentinites, partly weathered to Fe, Cr and Ni rich laterites.
