Very large, palaeoproterozoic orogenic gold deposit. Epigenetic, "mesothermal" mineralisation with a distinct structural control. The ore is hosted by albitised, mafic to intermediate, volcanic rock. It comprises a number of subvertical ore bodies.
71% of the gold is contained in the lattice of and as tiny inclusions in arsenopyrite and 22% in pyrite, in both thin veins and altered host rock. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the main ore minerals.
Visible gold was first detected in 1986 in an outcrop 4 km SSW of Suurikuusikko during regional gold exploration. A highly productive gold mine was started in 2007. The ore was mined both in an open-pit operation (2007-2012) and underground (since 2007). The operation has a life expectancy of 23 years (2009 – 2032).
