Active chromite mine. The operation started in 1889, it was originally an open pit, but now extraction of ore is mainly from underground.
Located approximately 12 "versts" (12.8 km) N of Biserskoye (Biserskii Zavod) Cr deposit, Laki Railway Station.
The ore is recovered from up to 30 chromitite horizons, 0.5-14 m thick, located in Precambrian dunites and harzburgites (olivine-pyroxene rocks) of the Saranovsky massif. These ultrabasic rocks are crossed by gabbro and gabbro-dolerite bodies and a number of dolerite and picrite dykes.
Mineralizations are often related to several stages of low grade metamorphism. The following stages of low-grade metamorphism have been established:
First stage: zeolite facies to prehnite - pumpellyite facies of moderate pressure, forming serpentine;
Second stage: prehnite-pumpellyite facies of high pressure (330-340ºC and 6-6.5 kb), based on the epidote-pumpellyite thermobarometer. Alpine type veins containing quartz, carbonate, epidote/clinozoisite, uvarovite and other Cr-bearing minerals originate in this event;
Third stage: prehnite-pumpellyite facies of higher pressure forming amongst other minerals amesite, perovskite and diaspore;
Fourth stage: prehnite-pumpellyite facies of moderate pressure (~3 kb) forming Cr-titanite, kämmererite and other low PT minerals;
Fifth stage: zeolite facies forming calcite, hydrotalcite and other low pressure minerals.
